FBI should hunt for right-wing wacko as source

WASHINGTON Investigators hunting for the source of the anthrax exposure that took the life of Kathy Nguyen, a New York hospital worker, have ruled out the city's subway system as the place where she came in contact with the deadly pathogen.

New York's heath commissioner told reporters over the weekend that a check of the subway line the 61-year-old Vietnamese immigrant used to get to work, visit friends and go shopping tested negative for anthrax. That leaves medical authorities scratching their heads and sends law enforcement officials back to the drawing board.

While Nguyen's death has stumped investigators, much more is known about the person thought responsible for her death and that of three others. FBI profilers believe the bioterrorist is a loner with a big chip on his shoulder and no stomach for directly confronting the targets of his anger.

Put another way, he profilers say the bioterrorist is probably a man is a spineless wimp who somehow managed to get his hands on some anthrax spores. Instead of going toe-to-toe with his enemies, he sent them a deadly dose of anthrax through the mail. That much is apparent from the FBI profile.

What the profile doesn't tell, but what is equally apparent to me, is that this guy is some kind of right-wing wacko.

How else do you explain his decision to send one anthrax-laden letter to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and what is now believed to be a second anthrax-laced missive to Sen. Patrick Leahy two Democrats in a Senate that Democrats control by a one-vote majority. The other letters were sent to media companies, another favorite target of the radical right.

None of the pathogen was mailed to Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott or to Rep. Tom DeLay and Rep. Dick Armey, the leading House right-wingers. What are the chances that some madman holed up in an Afghan cave would be so selective? What's the likelihood that someone in Kabul or Baghdad would put Democrats in their cross hairs and spare Republicans?

Does anybody really think that Islamic militants have an ax to grind with just Democrats after two Republican presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush led this nation to war against Iraq and then Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization?

I don't know what the FBI profilers were thinking when they came up with their assessment of who is responsible for the anthrax attacks, but I think they missed the most important clue: the man hates Democrats. That means he's probably well versed in the partisan issues that divide this nation's political parties and is deeply rooted in the ideology of right-wing conservatives.

While the vast majority of conservatives are content to use the ballot box for political ends, the bioterrorist the FBI seeks is willing to murder to bring about a power shift in Washington. At the top of this guy's profile should be the words "right-wing zealot."

He used the cover of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to launch one of his own. While those who toppled the World Trade Center and the Pentagon struck at symbols of this nation's financial and military might, the person behind the anthrax attacks doesn't want to destroy this country, he wants to wrest control of the Senate away from Democrats.

This madman isn't interested in chasing American infidels from Saudi Arabia or ending U.S. support of Israel; he wants to shift the Senate's balance of power back into the hands of the GOP.

I don't mean to imply that the Republican Party is behind the anthrax attacks. What I am suggesting is that someone with a warped mind and right-wing political leanings is the likely source of the anthrax letters.

The FBI would do well to follow this lead.

The Free Republic must be held accountable

Copyright © 1999, 2000, 2001 by Dan E. Moldea

On September 29, 1999, I posted an open letter at the ultra-conservative FreeRepublic.com--one of the largest and, in my opinion, most dangerous political forums on the Internet. During the four-day period prior to my letter, these Freeper-sharks had posted no fewer than a half-dozen defamatory threads about me, including, "Moldea Blackmailed Congress During Clinton's Impeachment," "The Curious Case of Dan Moldea," and "The Evil of Dan Moldea Exposed." All of these threads wound up on search engines throughout the Internet.

With the publication of my letter, I made the decision to take the time to challenge any and all such defamations with my own public responses--which would also appear on those same search engines. I advise others who have been the victims of Free Republic shark attacks to do the same. (Also see: Los Angeles Times & Washington Post v. Free Republic and Graham v. Oppenheimer.)

To date, I have received three public retractions for reckless and malicious charges leveled against me.

Here is a portion of my letter:

Over the past several months, friends and colleagues of mine have expressed their concerns about the numerous, baseless accusations of criminal activity that have been leveled against me at the Free Republic--many of which have wound up on search engines throughout the Internet. As a tribute to your effectiveness, I have admittedly been harmed by the lynch-mob atmosphere revolving around many of these posts, particularly those which have been not only false and misleading but reckless and malicious.

In short, many of you have drawn ridiculous and irresponsible conclusions about people, subjects, and events you know nothing about. And most of you have done so under false names, which is very frustrating to people, like me, who have to live with these charges without any means of making those responsible accountable for what they write.

Although I have no objection to those who use cyberspace handles for benign purposes, it is simply unfair that someone may state false facts and even allege criminal behavior anonymously. And I believe that making such statements without giving one's name is not only irresponsible but cowardly. The perennial argument that anonymity protects against retribution is lame and disingenuous.

The fact is that many of you post anonymously under your [Internet] handles (i.e. moneyrunner, sourcery, Doctor Raoul) to evade responsibility for your mindless speculations, half-baked opinions, and poorly-sourced facts. When people have no responsibility for what they say, they are apt to say anything. And the posts from the recent threads against me serve as a testament to that.

Thus, I respectfully ask those Freepers who do not accuse anonymously to stand up against those who do--and, in the process, help to curtail the venomous incivility endemic to this web site among those who disagree, especially when they are using fake names. . . .

That was the reason for my first Free Republic thread on May 19, 1999. I posted an article, "I Did Not Write 'The Mob President,'" initially on my web site and then on yours. The reason? One of your Freeper colleagues, who used an anonymous handle, had earlier posted a published story about President Clinton, called "The Mob President," and then falsely credited me with writing this piece--which I did not write and with which I completely disagreed.

After seeing my thread on the Free Republic, the person responsible did the honorable thing: [she] came online and accepted responsibility. That should have been the end of the matter, but my friends and I continued to see this story posted and reposted all over the web, still with my byline. Other than your super-responsible Alamo-Girl, who has made sincere efforts to correct this situation, I have been alone, trying to correct the record.

Consequently, over the past several days, I have been searching through Free Republic's archives and posting my side of the story on those threads in which I have been accused of something, particularly something criminal.

From now on, when someone seeks information about me on a search engine and clicks onto a Free Republic thread, they will, hopefully, get my version of events to balance the other things that have been written.

That is the sole purpose for what I have been doing here in the belly of the beast. And, not surprisingly, I have been taking a ton of grief because I have the audacity to come here and defend myself.

Even though most of you couldn't care less about me, I still ask you to do what I have always done: Stand up and identify yourself when you put something in writing.

A final note (December 2000): Obviously, I am concerned about the threat these people pose. In the midst of the 2000 presidential election, hundreds of anonymous activists within the Free Republic community appointed themselves as storm troopers for the Far Right. Not content simply to defeat Al Gore politically, they wanted to destroy him personally--in a manner not unlike the Free Republic's relentless effort against President Bill Clinton.

And they will surely continue to level false and misleading charges, anonymously, against the supporters of Clinton-Gore--while defaming at will. Already, numerous Freepers have compiled an updated "Hollywood blacklist," naming a variety of liberal celebrities. Also, although Free Republic claims not to be a hate site, it permitted Freepers to name the Democrats they hate most. And many of these Free Republic posters--including several who claim to be Christians--joked about and even encouraged the murder of journalists.

During the dramatic aftermath of the November 7 balloting, these right-wing zealots successfully organized anti-Gore rallies and protests throughout the United States. In effect, they decided to establish a clear public presence and to make FreeRepublic.com "a household name." With the election of George W. Bush, they are now embolden and will not just go away. Already, GOP activists are reaching out to Freepers and asking them to participate in a "ground war" against the anticipated critics of the new administration.

A newfound accountability for what these Freepers do and say should accompany their increased visibility. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that they will suddenly accept responsibility for their actions and statements voluntarily.

They are going to need help.

Sincerely,

Dan E. Moldea

AND, TGS also spins his own web log

(I wouldn't go there just yet - you'll get a taste below)

His subject is Steven Hatfill, the so-called "person of interest" in the anthrax mailer case, who has been mercilessly "tailed" by the FBI - 24/7, despite the total lack of a shred of evidence that he was in any way involved.

TGS has spin-doctored a comic book tale-of-the-tailed complete with dark heroes:

"Hatfill is an actor playing a part. Hatfill isn't even guilty of the things he pretends to be guilty of. For example, he did not fake his Masters thesis research, contrary to the bogus e-mail hatfill's friend, Dr. John Michie, anonymously fed to Internet journalist Stephen Dresch. hatfill wrote that e-mail, and the two other friends of his implicated in gross misconduct by the e-mail -- Prof. Lothar Bohm, hatfill's MSc advisor. and Prof. Ralph Kirby, hatfill's PhD advisor -- both know it and are playing along with the game. At hatfill's behest, Michie also funneled stories portraying hatfill as a racist and white supremacist collaborator into the rumor mill. He is neither. hatfill didn't submit a fraudulent PhD certificate or forged recommendations from real people in his job applications to the NIH, regardless of what the documents leaked from his government personnel file purportedly demonstrate. The forgeries were generated ex post facto to support Operation Amerithrax. hatfill is in no legal jeopardy whatsoever, and he knows it. hatfill will never be executed for murder, he will never be charged with sending the anthrax letters, and no grand jury will ever be empaneled to quiz him or his associates. hatfill is not under 24x7 surveillance by the FBI, contrary to the fanciful stories put about by his personal PR flack, Pat Clawson. hatfill's unnamed girlfriend, if she even exists, was never harassed by FBI agents named Jennifer Grant and Pamela Lane. Those agents probably don't even exist. The pond-draining stunt and the jaywalking stunt were public relations exercises, designed to condition the public that the FBI were genuinely interested in hatfill, and genuinely misguided in their pursuit of him -- i.e. that our domestic "WMD" policy has been determined by one senile, out-of-control bureaucrat in the FBI's Washington Field Office, Van Harp, who conveniently just announced his retirement. The exact function of this particular play in the Bush administration's larger WMD/9-11/Iraq strategy can only be guessed at. We'll probably have a much better shot at seeing the big picture come election time."

HATFILL "NO LONGER A SUSPECT"

We just received the following tip from a source close to Team Hatfill (the
quote is unattributed):

"Apparently an FBI special agent in the North East has privately relayed

the information that Dr Steven Hatfill is no longer a suspect in the anthrax

investigation. All camera survielance ended last week."

(Note misspelling:survielance  )

Of course, the 24x7 surveillance of Hatfill, like the bugging of his
girlfriend's apartment described in Connolly's faux
against Ashcroft, is a fable as NPR's David
Kastenbaum discovered some months back:

Back at the apartment where Steven Hatfill is living, things appear quiet
these days. On four occasions this month, NPR attempted to verify claims of
FBI surveillance, but turned up only empty parked cars.

Nevertheless, the writing has been on the wall for some time:

the Hatfill Gambit is being retired
and we suspect this report does accurately reflect the next major

move in the charade. Most of the first-round useful
idiots have been clued in that the party's over. Our public outing

of John Michie's role has actually helped the process along: these folks
increasingly realize they've been played for suckers.

At this point the incentive structure says that they best mumble a few
catechisms and make a low-key exit if they want to avoid looking like pathetic
dupes. Saving face is the name of the game now. It's most likely that the
useful idiots will be thrown some kind of bone to ease them through the
transition period: for example, we may hear for a while that the focus of
suspicion is still on US defence labs, not on an overseas perp. What will
happen after this transition period? Our speculation is that the new diffuse,
low-stakes cover story (a return to the old cover story used before Hatfill
was inserted to up the ante will be allowed to die on the vine over the course
of the next few months or years.

Like the Hatfill story, it will generate more heat than light but, unlike the Hatfill story, it will be impersonal and boring, a real snoozer highly functional, in context.

Will we ever hear the truth? That looks increasingly doubtful, we think. If
Bush had to cut a deal with Saddam
to get us all off the hook, then there can be no doubt but that his best
course is to let sleeping dogs lie. But even if he didn't, unless something
dreadful happens in Iraq, it's clear that Bush isn't going to need to open
this particular can of worms to win re-election. The economy is humming along,
the traumatic events of 9/11 already seem like ancient history, and most
voters figure that, if Bush felt it was necessary to invade Iraq, he probably
had a good reason, and maybe we're all happier for not knowing exactly

what it was. Plus, a lot of lies have already been told to get us where we are
today. That's an investment that's not easily scrapped. Bottom line: don't
hold your breath waiting for Bush to come clean on the anthrax.

(Note British misspelling: defence )

In an odd and convoluted way, The Great Satan appears to have taken up for Hatfill - but why?

Over identification or guilty conscience?

TGS has a penchant for role playing and

often dons the trappings of a character

fitting an aspect of his real personality:

       Dr. Victor Von Doom:

   "My Friends call me Victor."

Amerithrax said: "Submit a Tip if you have information regarding the Amerithrax investigation."

"Here's the tip:

Amerithrax is a hoax, a fraud, a diversion, a feint, a Potemkin Village, a sham, a scam, a PR exercise, cheap theatrics, wartime propaganda, disinformazia , a painted storefront on a Hollywood backlot, a joke, a goof, a delaying tactic, a stall, a charade, a fake, and a travesty. The purpose of Amerithrax is to temporarily distract the American people's attention from the fact that the United States is being blackmailed by Saddam Hussein with a handful of dust, and won't be able to do anything about for some time to come. The personnel of Amerithrax, such as Joyce Chiang bungler SA Bob Roth and Ruby Ridge coverup artist Van Harp, were specifically selected for incompetence and/or pliability. The Siegfried and Roy duo who were flown in to provide the bloodhound talking point used to keep this flagging story alive were specifically chosen for their suggestability and questionable professionalism, widely recognized in their own industry. The supposed "person of interest" to Amerithrax, Dr. Steven Hatfill, author of the unpublished science fiction novel Emergence, which postulates a bioterror attack on the US by Saddam Hussein behind a veil of terrorist proxies -- more or less the scenario that has come to pass, in other words -- is actually one of the authors of the Amerithrax gambit, which he conceived along with his immediate social circle of biowar specialists and Pentagon intelligence officers. Hatfill has not the slightest concern that he will ever be arrested in the anthrax deaths. Hatfill's mythical traumatized girlfriend will not be doing Larry King or Barbara Walters, Hatfill will not run out of money for legal expenses and be reduced to panhandling in the streets, because Uncle Sam is making sure he's taken care of, and the "growing sense of excitement" that John Ashcroft cited in the Amerithrax investigation four months ago will come to nothing, just as it has come to nothing in the four months since he cited it.

END TIP "

What if the anthrax were engineered to be resistant to certain antibiotics.
Is there a chance "piggy backing" antibiotics would offer a better chance.

I purchased Lawrence Joyce's How to Survive a Germ Warfare Attack over the web shortly after 9/11. It has a lot of info about biological agents, treatments, etc. He says that doubling up with both Cipro and Doxy could be effective against a resistant bacteria.

I know from personal, professional experience that adding antibiotic resistance to bacteria is a trivial matter -- all it takes is a $500 kit. I don't know, and haven't been able to find out, if it's as easy to engineer resistance to the new
like Cipro and Doxy as it is to penicillin or ampicillan.

Posted by The Great Satan to kattracks; Mitchell; Nogbad; EternalHope; cicero's_son On News/Activism 07/06/2002 11:02 PM EDT #7 of 127 Dr. Kenneth I. Berns, president of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, said he judged the probability that Iraq possessed weaponized smallpox as "reasonably high" and that Saddam Hussein would use such germs in a war against the United States as "quite high."

"Oh dear. Better hope he doesn't have anything genetically-engineered to evade the vaccine.

I use genetically-engineered viruses in my work, and it is rather frightening how easy it is with current technology to play mix and match with these things.

For instance, it is quite routine to take an ecotrophic virus (one that only infects a single species) and turn into an amphitrophic virus (one that infects a wide range of species) simply by swapping out the genes that code for the coat proteins. If Saddam is operating at that level of technology, I venture to say we could lose about a third of the population in the coming showdown -- comparable to a full-scale nuclear exchange.

If he has only conventional smallpox, anthrax, botulism, etc., then we may be able to contain the threat to something managable by building up our civil defense infrastucture. Even then, I don't think we're near that point -- perhaps in a couple of years. I expect Bush to keep up the rhetorical heat on Saddam and pursue every avenue to put the squeeze on him, including military pressure, but I thing those who are expecting a big assault in the next 12 months will be disappointed.

Way too dangerous, I'm afraid."

Are they not trying to distinguish among substrains of Ames?

"Indeed. Here's my
executive summary:

They looked at genetic markers in seven cultures of the Ames strain, as well as some non-Ames strains (which I will ignore here).

Four of the Ames cultures were adjudged indistinguishable genetically, based on markers in their chromosomes and two virulence plasmids: the terrorist anthrax and Ames cultures from three different US labs (B, C and D).

Three of the Ames cultures were genotypically distinct from these four: one came from another US lab, one from Porton Down, and one was obtained in 1997 from a Texas goat. (The goat culture is only the second known case of Ames being found in the nature.)

Only the Porton Down strain (which is known to have been derived from the original USDA Ames culture) showed any chromosomal differences compared to the other Ames strains; otherwise the distinguishing markers were all on plasmids.

They do not have a genotype for the original USDA culture, but the following inferences can be made, based on the observed markers and the known history of some of the samples:

The 1997 goat substrain represents an outgroup vis--vis the USDA anthrax.

(Actually, you don't need to see the markers to figure this out, of course.)

The Florida anthrax did not come from the Texas goat (mais a va sans dire), from laboratory A, and, if it came from Porton Down, it came from a different culture than the one examined by the scientists.

The Florida anthrax could have come from lab B, C, D, or from the original USDA culture by some other route. Based on the lack of variation between them, this set of cultures most likely represents the genotype of the original, canonical, USDA Ames.

And that's all you can say, based on the genotyping evidence."
